The Late Heavy Bombardment in the Inner Solar System: Is There Any Connection to Kuiper Belt Objects?

Data from lunar samples (Apollo, Luna, and lunar meteorites) indicate that the Moon was subjected to an intense period of bombardment around 3.85 billion year ago (Ga). Here a short review of this topic is given. Different interpretations exist, which either take this as the tail end of an intense but declining accretion period, or which consider a spike in the accretion rate at that time. The ...

A Wide-field Ccd Survey for Centaurs and Kuiper Belt Objects

A modiÐed Baker-Nunn camera was used to conduct a wide-Ðeld survey of 1428 deg2 of sky near the ecliptic in search of bright Kuiper Belt objects and Centaurs. This area is an order of magnitude larger than any previously published CCD survey for Centaurs and Kuiper Belt objects. No new objects brighter than red magnitude and moving at a rate 1A to 20A hr~1 were discovered, although m R \ 18.8 o...

The Small Numbers of Large Kuiper Belt Objects

We explore the brightness distribution of the largest and brightest (m(R)<22) Kuiper belt objects (KBOs). We construct a luminosity function of the dynamically excited or hot Kuiper belt (orbits with inclinations > 5) from the very brightest to m(R)=23. We find for m(R). 23, a single slope appears to describe the luminosity function. We estimate ∼12 KBOs brighter than m(R)∼19.5 are present in t...

Accretion in the Early Kuiper Belt II. Fragmentation

We describe new planetesimal accretion calculations in the Kuiper Belt that include fragmentation and velocity evolution. All models produce two power law cumulative size distributions, NC ∝ r for radii ∼< 0.3–3 km and NC ∝ r for radii ∼> 1–3 km. The power law indices are nearly independent of the initial mass in the annulus, M0; the initial eccentricity of the planetesimal swarm, e0; and the i...

Analysis of the Rotational Properties of Kuiper Belt Objects

We use optical data on 10 Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) to investigate their rotational properties. Of the 10, three (30%) exhibit light variations with amplitude ∆m ≥ 0.15mag, and 1 out of 10 (10%) has ∆m ≥ 0.40mag, which is in good agreement with previous surveys. These data, in combination with the existing database, are used to discuss the rotational periods, shapes, and densities of Kuiper Be...
